Some Frequently Asked Questions about the Veteran's Pension Benefit

Does every Veteran or surviving spouse receive this benefit?
Eligibility is determined based on service during a declared war period, income limitations, liquid assets, and a medically documented disability by a physician. Our dedicated Veteran's Care Managers will work closely with you to determine your eligibility.

What are the costs associated with applying for this benefit?
As a Veteran or surviving spouse, there are no costs associated with applying for the Veteran’s Financial Assistance program. We assist you in preparing your paperwork and managing your application through the VA beauracracy at no cost to you.

Does my Veteran's Pension have to be used for home care?
The Aid and Attendant Pension Benefit can be used for any number of qualifying medical expenses, not only home care. If you wish to use our free Care Management Services, however, the benefit must be used exclusively for home care.
If you wish to use the Pension for expenses other than home care, you may still apply directly to the VA for the Pension, but must ultilize the services of the VA Benefits Counselors to assist you with your application. We can still provide services for you if only a portion of the pension will be used for home care, but will not provide free care management of your application or assist with the yearly audits required by the VA to continue your Pension.

Can I apply for the VA Pension Benefits on my own?
Yes, however many veterans and their surviving spouses have experienced the frustration and lack of quick response from the Veterans Administration.  This happens because the application is incomplete, does not qualify as submitted, lacks critical documentation, or has confusing and contradictory information.
The application may then sit for extended periods while waiting for the required or corrected items.  Or, it is just simply denied.
Our dedicated Veteran's Care Managers have an approval rate of 95%, versus 30% for those who choose to deal directly with the VA and manage their own application.

How long does an application take for the VA to process?
This varies. It can be as quick as 8-10 weeks and as long as a year or more. Benefits are retroactive back to 30 days after the date of application, so when the pension is approved, you will receive a lump sum payment from the VA back to this date. It has been our experience that using our dedicated Care Managers to manage your application through the VA approval process can cut down significantly on the time needed to approve your pension benefit.

What are declared periods of war?
To be eligible for the pension benefits, a veteran must have served at least 90 days with at least 1 day served during one of the following declared periods of war:
WWI                 April 6, 1917 through November 11, 1918
WWII                December 7, 1941 through December 31, 1946
Korea                June 27, 1950 through January 31, 1955
Vietnam            August 5, 1964 through May 7, 1975
Gulf War           August 2, 1990 through a date to be set by law

The veteran must have also been honorably discharged.

Do I have to go to a VA physician to be covered by the pension benefits?
No, you can continue to use your own physician. Your home care will be provided by Visiting Valet Senior Care once your application is approved.
